1 x 1 = 1 2 x 3 = 6 3 x 4 = 12 4 x 5 = 18 5 x 5 = 25
What did you notice about these? Whoops there is an error! 4 x 5 actually = 20. What message will you send to me … what message will you send to your employee this year?
If your first thought was ” hey there is a wrong answer” that is good – you noticed the anomoly. In fact, in our business we can’t be perfect, we do make mistakes, try things that don’t always work out — that is why risk management exists. But what we do with the anomoly and how we use that to work with members of our team and our partners is what is important.
When you see something wrong are you quick to say “Hey you got it wrong!” Or might you say “Good job, you got 80% right, now lets focus on refinding the 20% to see if we can improve.”
Personally I like the latter. I always remember in real estate the saying that 80% of the sales go to 20% of the agents. Applying the same thinking to your human resources though it just as important but from a different lens. As we look to strengthen the contributions of our team, staff, partners, communities — lets focus on the 80% and celebrate it … then work together to improve the 20% that ‘isn’t quite’ where you want it.
The goal is to foster a collaborative work environment where people are rewarded for innovation and risk taking, while being supported when challenges emerge!
Good luck.
