Tourism Starting to Gain Federal Awareness in Canada and USA

by Nancy Arsenault on March 15, 2009

Recently the federal Canadian budget made a significant statement on tourism in the Throne Speech and specifically allocating millions of dollars of federal support to the industry. This is inevitably linked to the continuous and tireless effort of people in our industry across the country, and led by our Tourism Industry Associations nationally and at the provincial level as our representative voice in Ottawa. Thank you all — we have made great progress and now we must use the provincial and federal opportunities upon to to responsibly and sustainably increase tourism visitation and celebrate all that is terrific about . We must also track, report back and celebrate progress to continually educate the people of Canada and our politicians about the value of tourism. We all know how to travel, but strangely far to few actually understand the business of tourism that allows us all to enjoy travel!

Now tourism leaders in the USA are poised to meet President Obama to speak about the importance of their $740 billion dollar industry that employs 7.7 million people. Again, another show of strength and understanding that the tourism agenda is gaining political ground and our metrics and impact about the economic, social, cultural and environmental attributes for tourism are becoming better understood – one step at a time.

    Hello all!

I am a Canadian studying a Masters of Tourism in Australia. I have come to enjoy reading the posts on your website very much.

Recently the Australian government has given details of the stimulus package designed to improve the economic environment in Australia. When the package was provided to the other arms of the government it was the Tourism industry which spoke up and requested a review of the funds.

The challenge of tourism is that in the eyes of traditional economists, tourism's impact is difficult to quantify.

I hope to see a greater involvement at all levels to encourage the government to take the industry more seriously.

Furthermore, I would like to see the Canadian government take a new, passionate approach to renewing discussions with the Chinese government in securing an Approved Destination Status (ADS). With a large Chinese population in Canada, an enhanced relationship with China would be beneficial to say the least. A small slice of the Chinese outbound market would be sufficient.

Thank you all for the work you put into this project. It is very helpful and a great way for me to keep in touch with some of the issues relating to Canadian tourism. If you would like some ideas or comments on Experiential Tourism that is taking place in Australia I would be more that willing to provide a post or two about such events.

    Thanks again!

    Regards,

    Michael
