Amazing! Edge of the Wedge 27 … Whoddathunk!

by Nancy Arsenault on March 25, 2012

Today we the launch of the 27th program of Edge of the Wedge; an experiential travel training program in Rocky Harbour Newfoundland that has surpassed anyones expectations in continued demand and interest. Since 2005, over 600 people representing tourism businesses, economic development, destination development and government have taken this course and discovered the opportunities this new layer of tourism can bring to their business and region.

GMIST – the Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism is the organization behind this awesome training opportunity that began with only people from Atlantic Canada in the beginning but increasingly folks from other provinces have asked to join – and did! We now see evidence of the seeds of this engaging, interactive, community based training leading to new tourism products in Manitoba and Ontario.

Today another 24 people gather to:

  • Discover what is experiential travel is all about.
  • Immerse in a destination (Gros Morne National Park) and the local community businesses and people in Rocky Harbour and Norris Point to participate in unique hands-on tourism activities and learn with people who have ‘made the choice’ to embrace doing business differently.
  • Think about who is their ‘ideal guests’.
  • Who and where are your hidden gems in your community?
  • Learn about the progression of economic value, crafting and pricing experiences.
  • Engage in conversations about the benefits and challenges of being a catalyst for change and new opportunities.
  • Connect with voices of experience about lessons learned about packaging and marketing experiences.
  • Participate is some of the most unique, memorable experiences of this region which we know will stimulate your thinking about what you can do back home!

I think we need a west coast equivalent at the Vancouver Island Training Centre (at the Painted Turtle Guesthouse).  ; )
